The inlet grilles of many ventilation systems on board of ships are being made too small or placed close to the water. By doing so, droplets and drops of water are drawn in by the fans.

Apart from being undesireable, this is harmful for fans and machinery. By applying our misteliminators this problem is solved. The airborne water droplets are separated from the air, collected and drained. Even the deckhose can do no harm anymore.

When compared to normal intake grills the Mist Eliminator has the following advantages

  • Higher flow speed : 5 m/s through gross width
  • Smaller sizes due to higher permissable air speed
  • Low weight due to sea water resistant aluminium construction and smaller size
  • Higher efficiency : down to 20 microns (see chart 1)
  • low pressure loss (see chart 2)


The Mist Eliminators may also be supplied with a closable hatch (fireflap) according to Lloyd's requirements.

Construction herefore is concent. Hatches will normally be delivered in aluminium execution according dimension sketch (watertight)

The Heinen & Hopman Weather Louvre System (WLS) is specially developed to remove water drops, even under heavy rain conditions and during heavy storm very efficiently for all wind directions approaching the WLS. According to the requirements their pitch may be varied giving different separation efficiencies as well as different velocities behind the WLS at the same wind velocity and the same rainfall.

Chart 2 shows the operating principles of the WLS. The air flow containing rain approaches the WLS. Rain drops are entering together with the air flow into the different fow channels (1) formed between two WLS proviles (2) Because of inertia droplets in pinge on the profiles and are stopped in the hook (3) to form a liquid film. Because of gravity force the water film is inp inge on the first part of the WLS profiles are accelerated because of a narrower flow channel between two WLS profiles at the hook. These accelerated droplets then impinge on the latter part of thw WLS profiles (4) and are stopped in the second hook (5). Special means are incorporated in the profiles to prevent water from re-entrainment.
